Hans (ハンス, Hanzu?) is a minor character of The Promised Neverland series. He is a four-year-old orphan who formerly resided at Grace Field House Plant 3 under the parental care of Isabella. Due to his age, Hans is considered to be one of the house's "low-quality goods".[1]

After Grace Field House Plant 3 burnt down, Hans was moved to a different plantation at Grace Field, albeit not the same one as Phil.[2]

Appearance[]

Hans is a young boy with light skin, closed eyes, a square face, an upturned nose, and slanted eyes.[3] He has light-brown hair with soft spikes. He wears the standard Grace Field uniform- a plain white long sleeved button-up shirt and white pants along with brown boots. His identification number, "82394", can be seen on the left side of his neck.

Personality[]

Hans is cheerful young boy who likes to play soccer, tag and hide-and-seek with the rest of his siblings. He especially enjoys playing with Tom. Hans also adores his older siblings and his foster mother, Isabella. Despite having the lowest test score of all the four-years-olds, Hans is still rather intelligent and gets good grades.

History[]

Hans was born at Grace Field in 2041 and sent to Plantation 3 a year later in 2042, growing up along with several other children under the parental care of Isabella. He was left behind with the younger children at Grace Field House, while the children over five years old made their escape. Hans now resides at a different plantation at Grace Field after the Grace Field House Plant 3 was burnt down.

Plot[]

Introduction Arc[]

Taking daily tests, playing a game of tag, eating scrumptious homemade food and having a good time – Hans went through the same routine every day at Grace Field House.

Jailbreak Arc[]

Hans continued to have a comfortable life at Grace Field, unaware of the things happening in the House and his oldest siblings.

On the night when the House burnt down, Hans was seen expressing concern regarding the absence of his fifteen older siblings. After Isabella failed to retrieve the older children, Hans was seen sleeping with his other siblings who were left behind, being cared for by Isabella. Emma promises that she will come back within two years to rescue her siblings from Grace Field.

Cuvitidala Arc[]

Two months after the escape and Grace Field House Plant 3 burnt down, it is revealed that Hans was transferred to one of the other plantations at Grace Field, albeit not the same one as Phil.

Return to Grace Field Arc[]

After getting the word that all the farms are to be abolished, Emma returns to Grace Field House to get Hans and the others. When Emma first sees Hans upon reuniting, he is busy playing soccer with Tom. Emma calls out to both of them with excitement, to which Tom asks "why are you here?" and Hans asks "wanna play soccer?". Emma seemingly ignores Tom's question, but happily accepts Hans' offer and proceeds to play soccer with the two boys.

Human World Arc[]

Upon arriving in the Human World, Hans is seen to be visibly worried and shocked about Emma's disappearance. Hans, along with the other children, agrees to search for Emma so they can reunite with her again.[4] Over the next two years spent in the Human World, Hans began attending school. During spring 2049, he finally reunites with Emma again and cries tears of joy, even though she lost her memories.[5]

Relationships[]

Emma, Norman and Ray[]

Emma and Norman have a deep regard for Hans, as he is a part of their "family". Upon learning that all of her sibling that had been shipped out were dead, Emma and Norman vow to escape with all of their younger siblings, despite most of them being under the age of five. Ray, however, is more skeptical of their plan and considers everyone other than Don and Gilda to be burdens to their escape plan.

Despite this, Ray really does care about his younger siblings, but believing that escaping with everyone was impossible, he had emotionally detached from them over the years and tried to avoid becoming too close to them so that he would not be as sad when they were inevitably killed. After Norman successfully came up with a plan to escape without sacrificing anyone, Ray admitted defeat and finally joined Emma in vowing to not leave anyone behind. They ultimately decided to escape with all of their siblings over the age of five and return to rescue their younger siblings within two years, before they were old enough to be shipped out.

Isabella[]

Hans did not know the real intentions of his caretaker, Isabella, and loved her very much as if she were his real mother. After fifteen of his older siblings escaped from Grace Field, Hans was sent to a different plantation at Grace Field with a new mother. Still not knowing the truth of the orphanage, it is assumed Hans loved his new caretaker just as much as Isabella.

Grace Field Escapees[]

Hans and his older siblings loved each other very much. After fifteen of his older siblings escaped from Grace Field and Plant 3 burned down, Hans was seen expressing concern of their whereabouts. Hans did not know the truth of the orphanage nor did he know that his older siblings had actually escaped, and after being relocated to a different plantation at Grace Field, he was told that his fifteen older siblings had been sent to live with foster families. Despite leaving him behind, the Grace Field Escapees vowed to return within two years to rescue Hans and their other younger siblings before they could be shipped out.
