The Adventures of Ugo is a book written by William Minerva with a hidden message on its ex libris. Upon closer inspection, Emma discovers that "The Adventures of Ugo," has the Morse code for 'promise.' The book itself tells a fictional story that contains subtle parallels to the real dangers in the Demon World that are meant to serve as warnings for the children. Minerva made several copies of this book and donated them to Grace Field House and several other farms in hopes the children there will pick up on its underlying messages.

Premise[]

Adventures of Ugo

The book's main characters, Ugo and Marvine.

This book tells the story of a young man named Ugo and his lemur friend, Marvine, who have adventures in an fantasy-like world parallel to what the orphans experienced in the Demon World after escaping from Grace Field House. William Minerva intended for the children who escaped the farms to use the book as a guide on how to avoid the hazards outside Grace Field House and how to survive in the Demon World.

Hidden messages[]

When decoding the morse code on the ex libris of all of the books donated to Grace Field's library by William Minerva, Emma discovers that "The Adventures of Ugo," has the morse code for 'promise', a reference to The Promise made between humans and demons 1,000 years ago.

The Adventures of Ugo uses analogies to explain the bizarre flora and fauna in the Demon World to the children reading the book, whist avoiding suspicion from the workers at the Premium Farms. The book uses the Snakes of Alvar Pena as an analogy for the Bloodsucker Trees. It also makes references to the Anemone Plants and Jewel Flowers found the the Demon Forest.

The book also hints at how to find the pen cap for the Promised Pen. During a pre-recorded phone call from Minerva inside the floating cabin which contains the elevator at Goldy Pond, he told the escapees that he left "the rest of the details" in "Marvine's bed". In the book, Marvine sleeps inside of a desk drawer, alluding that the pen cap was hidden in a nearby desk drawer.
